Throughout my life I have kept journals, written stories, poetry, lyrics and now I am putting my memoir together…gathering a lot of extraordinary details .I was born in Virginia, and we were soon off to Ethiopia when I was two! I grew up in Somalia, Nigeria, and Cuba, with my family helping communities adapt their lives to survive. I had quite a time learning new languages in each new country, a new school meant a new language! My mother’s ancestors came from Ireland in 1890s went to the outback in Australia, The Duracks, the highly acclaimed book and movie Kings in Grass Castles won her cousin Mary Durack an OBE and a Damehood.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Durack My great-aunt was Fanny Durack an Olympic Gold Medalist in 1912. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fanny_Durack
My Dad was from Courtney North Dakota, but ended up with his father in Montana where they built Wilson’s Motel in Bozeman, log cabins an all…
Kings in Grass Castles … watch The Movie
The Duracks , their story from 1898…My mother was Marjorie Durack; her mother, my grandmother, was Dewy Durack, Patrick Durack where this story begins was my great, great Grandfather… This is my maternal family history written and researched by Dame Mary Durack AC DBE
It is the story of Durack’s pioneering family establishing its pastoral interests in the Australian outback during the 19th century and deals with the life and times of Durack’s grandfather Patrick Durack, an Irish immigrant who became a leader of the overlanders who brought their cattle on hoof to the tropical north.
I am researching the modern-day story of the Durack Dynasty… and the part of the family tree they left out of the book! Plenty to catch up on. Working title Persian Melon
Over the years I have been writing with Maggie Hammand at the famous Groucho Club ( author of Writing for Dummies), creative writing courses in London and Canterbury and working with freelance journalist Kerry Fowler. I graduated with my first degree, an MA in creative writing from Christ Church Canterbury University in 2018 , I did it in one year! My recent writing includes: film reviews for Unified, poetry for Mslexia, articles for WACS, 1North East. Now working on my novel “What Happened to Sarah?” and my Memoir “Let’s Keep It Between Us”
